Analytical chemistry reveals HDL-C impact of PCSK9 E670G polymorphism

Jan 17 2011

E670G polymorphism in the proprotein convertase subtilisin-like kexin type 9 (PCSK9) gene has been investigated using an analytical chemistry process to determine its impact on levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).

The research was carried out by a team comprising scientists from Guangxi Medical University's School of Premedical Sciences and Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, writing in Lipids in Health and Disease.

Manuscripts published by the periodical cover all areas of research into the effect of lipids in disease and general health.

In their study, the scientists used gel electrophoresis as part of the analytical chemistry process used to assess HDL-C levels in male and female patients carrying the PCSK9 gene with and without the G allele.

Those with the polymorphism were found to have higher levels of HDL-C in general than non-carriers of the G allele, particularly within the Han population.

Heightened HDL-C serum levels were particularly associated with the male portion of the population.
