Higher flow rates and higher productivity with BioPro IEX

The pressure flow characteristics of a resin determine its productivity and are therefore one of the key factors in developing an efficient purification process. Flow and generated backpressure are directly dependent on each other. But the physical properties of the resin also have a great influence on the generated pressure drop. In general, the particle size of the resin is the overriding parameter responsible for the separation efficiency according to the diffusion processes and for the inherent backpressures during the chromatographic processes.

High-quality resins for biochromatography

BioPro IEX and BioPro IEX SmartSep form a series of ion exchange resins specifically designed for biochromatography. They are available as strong anion exchanger and strong cation exchanger. Their particles are based on polymethacrylate beads, with a particle size of 10 µm, 20 µm, 30 µm (BioPro IEX SmartSep) and 75 µm (BioPro IEX). High-quality resins such as YMC BioPro IEX and YMC BioPro IEX SmartSep enable a comparatively low back pressure, so that the flow rate can be correspondingly higher. This leads directly to shorter retention times and, consequently, to significant time savings.

Excellent pressure flow characteristics allow for highest productivity

YMC has experimentally investigated the pressure flow properties of BioPro IEX and BioPro IEX SmartSep and presented the results in two Technical Notes. In addition, the pressure flow properties are compared with resins of other base materials. The results are impressive: The YMC resins show significantly better pressure flow characteristics. This may be related to the rigidity of the base beads used. Across the entire flow rate range, the BioPro IEX (SmartSep) resins provide lower backpressure which allows for higher applicable flow rates. In addition, the pressure flow curve suggests reversible compression behaviour over a wide range of linear flow velocities. As a result, with the IEX resins from YMC you save time and increase the productivity of your overall process enormously.
