UK residents putting their health at risk for a sun tan
May 01 2013
Britons could be putting their own health in danger to pick up their desired tan this summer, new findings show.
Research from Cancer Research UK and Nivea Sun has suggested that around 14 per cent of people are more driven to gain their ideal tan due to the dismal weather witnessed across the country over the last year.
The study discovered that 44 per cent of people planning to travel abroad this summer see spending time in the sun as a good reason for venturing overseas, whereas a third of holidaymakers admitted that getting a tan is one of their key reasons for travelling.
Nevertheless, while 87 per cent of people are aware of the threats of sun exposure, some individuals are still not taking the necessary precautions to avoid sunburn and protect themselves from skin cancer.
Only 65 per cent of respondents plan to use sunscreen of at least factor 15 this summer, whereas 36 per cent insist they always spend more time in strong sun when they are on holiday.
Yinka Ebo, Cancer Research UK senior health information officer, said: “We know it’s been tough getting through the long winter, especially when last summer was such a wash out. But it’s still important to avoid getting sunburnt when it finally makes an appearance.
“We all need some sun to make vitamin D for healthy bones, but overexposure to the sun’s rays can cause sunburn, which is a sign that the DNA in your skin cells has been damaged. Not only can this cause premature ageing and wrinkles, it increases the risk of skin cancer.”
Ms Ebo emphasised that using a combination of shade, clothing and SPF 15 sunscreen is crucial to protect people from strong sunlight.
The two organisations have recommended spending time in the shade if their shadow is shorter than their height, whereas a hat, T-shirt and sunglasses are vital when the sun is strong.
