Validating LC capillary column performance
Sep 23 2024
Biotech Fluidics has announced that Dr Maisch HPLC GmbH, experts in liquid chromatography, has integrated the Biotech Liquid Micro Flow Meter into its testing system to ensure the accuracy of its capillary columns' performance.
Located in Southwest Germany, Dr Maisch HPLC GmbH has established itself over 45 years as a leading producer of high-quality capillary columns for HPLC and UHPLC. The company is committed to providing specialised solutions to meet the growing demand for both routine and complex separations.
In liquid chromatography, precise flow rate control is crucial for optimising retention time and column efficiency. To ensure each column meets stringent standards, Dr Maisch rigorously tests every product. However, measuring the flow rate, especially at extremely low flow rates delivered by capillary columns, can be challenging.
Johannes Maisch, CEO of Dr Maisch HPLC GmbH, explained: “To have close control of our capillary testing procedure we installed a Biotech Liquid Micro Flow Meter in our chromatographic test system. With this reliable device we can validate that our test system for produced capillary columns is running at the correct flow rate. Using the Liquid Micro Flow Meter, we can now monitor the flow rate continuously, and with full system control can validate our performance testing of individual capillary columns. We have also found that in-line solvent degassing using a Biotech Degasser is another important part of keeping the system performance at the highest level.”

The Biotech Liquid Micro Flow Meter is designed to provide real-time monitoring of ultra-low fluidic flows, ranging from 100 nL/min to 80 µL/min, with high sensitivity and non-invasive measurements. It’s suitable for various applications, including HPLC, UHPLC, LC/MS, high-precision flow cytometry and micro-/nanoscale fluidics. The meter uses a high-resolution thermal flow sensor that is accurate and sensitive and is compatible with almost any solvent without being invasive.
