Inhalation challenges analysed with mass spectrometry

Apr 01 2011

Inhalation challenges in humans have been analysed using mass spectrometry and gas chromatography.

Published in the Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology, the research aimed to monitor exposure to isocyanates, which can lead to respiratory disorders such as asthma.

Analysing 121 urine samples from patients undergoing respiratory challenges, the scientists used gas chromatography mass spectrometry to check the status of the samples at different points in time after exposure.

The experts concluded that this process "appears to be the most suitable, reliable and sensitive method to monitor isocyanate uptake by an individual".

Following exposure to varying levels of diisocyanates, differences between aromatic and aliphatic isocyanates were uncovered, with the former being eliminated more slowly.

The Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology is an online, open access resource that publishes peer reviewed papers in this area of science.

It is designed as a resource for both researchers and clinicians and is intended to cover a wide range of subject matter.
