Food products will become key to life longevity
Apr 05 2012
Aging baby boomers and other generations will look to food products to increase their lifespan and make them healthier, according to new research from Institute of Food Technologists' Wellness.
Baby boomers are defined as those who were born between the start of 1946 to the end of 1964 in the US, many of which started to reach retirement last year. The research suggests that many of the aging population will increasingly look to food products that help then with the illnesses and chronic conditions common to older people, such as diabetes, vision loss and bone/joint problems.
Lu Ann Williams, head of research for Innova Market Insights, noted there are several key areas of opportunities for food scientists, manufacturers and marketers.
The first is adding protein to boost metabolism, prevent far gain and also avoid muscle loss. There are also opportunities for vision health, through vitamin A and lutein supplements.
Calcium is already widely recognised for its health effects, put could be incorporated in a wider range of food stuffs that promote healthy bones. Dinks containing glucosamine and chondroitin will be popular, and Omega 3s and B vitamins will be recognised for their cognitive benefits.
