Innovative Low-Volume Degassing Module for Microfluidic Systems
Jul 03 2023
Biotech Fluidics introduces its revolutionary low-volume online degassing modules designed specifically for micro- and nanofluidic systems. These modules find applications in various life science fields, including dispensing, diagnostics, drug screening, nucleic acid sequencing, and tissue culture.
In micro- and nanofluidic systems, the presence of air or gas bubbles can significantly impair functionality, posing challenges for bubble elimination once they form. Such bubbles can lead to aggregation issues with particles or proteins, hinder chemical functionalisation of surfaces, and even cause cellular death in cell culture applications.
Robin Oz, Degassing Product Specialist at Biotech Fluidics, highlighted the importance of degassing: "We've observed how a single gas bubble in micro and nano liquid dispensers can severely affect their dispensing precision and accuracy. Removing dissolved gases from liquids before dispensing eliminates the risk of having bubbles in the fluidic channels."
He continued: "Liquid degassing is also crucial in microscale applications like Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) analysis, where sensing heavily relies on analyte-functionalised surface interactions. A bubble can obstruct the surface, resulting in irregular and non-specific signals, affecting the sensogram. Installing the low-volume DEGASI® PLUS MICRO online degassing module prior to liquid introduction to the SPR system completely eliminates this gas bubble problem."
The DEGASi® PLUS MICRO by Biotech Fluidics represents an advanced degasser tailored for SPR and other micro- and nanofluidic system applications. With a low volume capacity of 100 µl per channel, this cutting-edge system effectively removes dissolved gases from the liquid phase, preventing bubble formation proactively. Moreover, it efficiently eliminates oxygen, ensuring seamless compatibility with UV detection methods. The DEGASi® PLUS MICRO is available in versions ranging from 1 to 6 channels.
