Borgwaldt RM20S smoking machine is reliable
Aug 26 2011
In a study published by the Chemistry Central Journal, a team from British American Tobacco tested the Borgwaldt RM20S smoking machine (RM20S) to determine how closely the system could replicate in vivo exposures.
Using an in-house designed whole smoke chamber and other quantitative analysis processes, the team demonstrated the reliability and robustness of the RM20S in delivering smoke to in vivo cultures.
They found that the syringe of smoke dose generated by the RM20S created errors in less than nine per cent of instances, proving the precision and accuracy of the machine.
Furthermore, it was found to deliver smoke uniformly throughout the chamber.
"These results suggest this smoke exposure system is a reliable and repeatable method of generating and exposing ALI in vitro cultures to cigarette smoke," the report claimed.
The team suggested that the machine will be useful in the evaluation of cigarette smoke in the future, as well as other air pollutants and inhaled pharmaceuticals.
