Radioactive contamination found in New Jersey water

New Jersey water is contaminated with trace elements of a toxic radioactive substance from a local nuclear power station.

This is according to the local state environmental agency, which noted the Oyster Creek facility is leaking tritium - a radioactive hydrogen that can bind easily with oxygen, Mayden Health reports.

A directive from the New Jersey government has been issued to the owner of the plant - Exelon Corporation - informing the company it is responsible for the contamination and will be required to clean it up.

According to the news provider, there is now 50 times more radioactive material in one of the state's main aquifers than is standard in the US, with tritium being hard to identify and easily consumed through contaminated produce.

Earlier this year, a recycling plant near the unincorporated community of the Acreage in Florida was being investigated for allegedly providing polluted soil to residents in the area, Freedom Communications reported.
